When I first started my career as a copywriter and began sharing the news with family and friends, I was often asked the same things over and over again. This need to answer these Frequently Asked Questions, or FAQs, made me realise that perhaps many of you may have similar burning questions. 

In this series, I will attempt to answer the most common questions about being a copywriter, copy editor and proofreader so that you may rest easy in this knowledge and perhaps, learn something to help you achieve your goals.

FAQ #2 - How do you know that you need a copywriter?

There are many factors you need to consider when deciding whether you need to hire a copywriter. With many resources on the internet to help you write engaging copy, you might ask why should I pay someone?  Can't I do it myself? The answer to that is:

The answer to that is: Yes, of course, you can.

If you are just starting out, wisdom will tell you to save your pennies.

Do all of the writing without the help of a copywriter.

It's smart business sense to keep your expenses low until your income comes rolling in. By then, you should know your target market, and you can think about taking your enterprise to the next level with clever planning.

But... aren't you a copywriter?

What's the catch?

Well, for one, writing effective copy is time-consuming.

Depending on your needs, a marketing campaign with multiple layers requires planning, research and hours of time. Think: website copy, social media marketing content, advertising brochures, etc. It's not something that you can do in 20 minutes.

Boosting your website traffic, increasing your client base or building Facebook 'Likes', needs someone with time and effort. Something many business owners don't have much of.

Because, let's face it - when you are running a business, trying to balance home and social life, time is often your worst enemy.

After working an 8-10 hour day in the office (salon, workshop, cafe or wherever it may be) most of us are desperate to get out of there and spend time with family or friends.

Don't get me wrong. You can do it!

You'll need to be prepared to spend many nights finding the right words to represent your product or service. When instead, you could be playing with the kids, drinking vino over dinner with your friends, or loving your loved one.

To me, this is a no-brainer.

If you can write persuasively and do it well, then you may not need anyone to do the work for you. Using various online resources, you should be able to write good copy and see results.

And if all else fails, you can use the services of a proofreader. Wordsmiths who love to check the work of others will fine-tune your copy to maximise its impact on your target market.

However, if your own written communication skills are lacking [i.e. you can't: a) write in simple sentences, b) use correct punctuation or c) spell to save yourself] then you definitely need a copywriter.

It will be money well-spent. And could save you from damaging your business' reputation by using grammatically incorrect or misspelled copy that sounds like a child has written it. Your professionalism is at stake, so don't muck around.

If you want to be taken seriously in your target market and beat the competition - you need to hire a copywriter.

And lastly, it can be costly.

Ah, yes, The Cost. This is often the first thing that many business owners worry about. When thinking about using the services of someone like mine, it can be a big factor in decision-making. Can we afford it?

When you hire a copywriter, you are hiring a specialist wordsmith. Someone who will lure your customers in with slick, sexy copy that seduces with a sales pitch directly aimed at their needs and desires.

If you want to take your business to the next level and compete in the marketplace, then you need a copywriter.

A copywriter will help you find the right words to market your product or service, by highlighting the benefits for potential customers and clients. In turn, this will enable you to do what you do best - sell, sell, sell!

Ask yourself:

Do I have the time?

Do I have the skills?

Do I have the money?

If you answered NO to at least two of these questions, then you can certainly at least consider using the services of a copywriter.
